six degrees could change the world

Taking a quick break from testing my new website.

Did anyone watch National Geographic’s Six Degrees Could Change the World last night?

Definitely check it out if you didn’t. The website (click on title above) has videos at each degree of change and what to expect at each degree warmer, up to a total of six. In addition, National Geographic created a KILLER website portal.

Imagine, with all of the info we have now, people are still lazy ignorant misinformed to think this problem doesn’t exist - and refuse to recycle even the *smallest* things for example (starting small here) - bottles & cans. I’m proud to say that most of my family is converted. I’m just a bit passionate about the topic on a personal level (not to the point of extremes but the “small things” that I need to share some insight).

The residents are not always to blame - local recycling programs are partially to blame by making it overly difficult to recycle. (FYI: Yes, you are legally required to recycle, nationally, every locality recycles! It’s the law!) Offering only once a month pick-ups for residents. I don’t understand that either. That’s an enormous amount of recyclable waste building up in households - especially if you forget to drag it to the curb! What the heck is everyone supposed to do with all of this? Drop it off, I suppose - but definitely start complaining to your locality.

I’m going to post a few informative links in the NYC Tri-State Area:

If none of that info contains good enough reason to start, look into local incentives you may be offered, like rebates on window replacements, etc., saving money is always a great motivator.

OK, so, that’s my recycling rant for the next few months. Every now and then I try to just put it out there. If one person starts recycling as a result of reading my rant, hey, that’s one small step closer to solving the problem.

I’m nowhere near perfect. I drive an SUV (we did research hybrid models, at the time they were not making it easy to lease one), I love decorating during the holidays with lights, etc. - at the very least I try doing very small things to help. In an ideal world I would be putting Solar Panels on my home. I’m tired of paying electric bills. ;-) And I’m not one of those people out there hanging my laundry on a line either. Not perfect. Just doing whatever small recycling I can while doing my research to find out what other things I am able to do to limit my personal CO2 emissions.

Environmentalists are not asking us to forgo most pleasures in life - if it’s glass or plastic, plain and simple, recycle it - start small!

Such a small thing that can make a huge difference. Recycling can be the start of many stepping stones we can follow to a better, greener planet.

OK rant finished! Onward with testing the new site!
